Orientation
The Island
North Shore
North Shore
Princeville & Hanalei

Princeville, Hanalei, and everything out to the end of the road at Haena. Green mountains straight up out of the water and so much foliage it looks like a scene from Jurassic Park. It rains more here than anywhere else on the island, usually in short bursts.

East Side
East Side
Kapaa & Lihue

The airport, Costco, Walmart, Safeway, and most of the island's everyday shopping. About an hour from Princeville.

South Shore
South Shore
Poipu & Koloa

Sunnier and drier than the north, and green sea turtles come up onto the sand at Poipu Beach Park. About 90 minutes from Princeville through the Tree Tunnel.

Waimea Canyon
West Side
Waimea Canyon

Sometimes called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, with Kokee State Park above it. Two hours from Princeville and 45 minutes from Poipu — works as part of a south shore day. A full day either way.

Meals
Dinners

Group dinners at Bali Hai Villas. There's a large barbecue area by the pool and plenty of outdoor space. We'll rotate dinner captains each night — the captain plans the meal and delegates what everyone brings or helps with.

Practical

Bring

  • Spices (units have salt & pepper only)
  • Disposable plates and cups
  • Beach chairs, or buy at Costco on arrival
  • A beach mat
  • Snorkel gear, or rent from Snorkel Bob's or the Bali Hai desk
  • Reef-safe sunscreen (it's the law here)
  • Volleyball, and a net if you can
  • Reusable grocery bags
  • Rain jacket
  • Closed-toe shoes

Worth knowing

  • Barbecues are by the pool at Bali Hai
  • One-lane bridges start west of Hanalei. Yield to oncoming traffic, let five to seven cars cross at a time
  • Cell service drops off past Hanalei. Screenshot anything you need out there
  • December 25 is a closed day — Costco, most restaurants, every farm tour. Buy what you need by the 24th
  • Reef-safe sunscreen only — regular stuff gets confiscated
